There are a lot of reasons why you might want to secure a airline ticket at the last minute. I'm sure that although you are nervous about the flight you are more nervous that you are going to be stuck with a high ticket price. That isn't always the case and there are some things that you can do to secure a cheaper airline ticket, even if it is booked at the last minute.

I've flown several times by booking at flight at the last minute, or at lease within a few days of when I needed to fly. I still start my search just as if I were going to book my flight well in advance. I do a search online at one of my favorite travel search websites (I have quite a few bookmarked so I can choose from any of them) to see what kind of a deal I can find that way.

If you are flying because of the loss of a loved one then you can also call the airline and ask for a bereavement fare. Although the discount is not as steep as I think it should be they do allow you to fly for less if they are a close enough relative. The airline will ask for proof of their passing in order to pass the discounted fare to you so be prepared for this.

By keeping yourself ready to go and by being as flexible as possible when flying at the last minute you will be able to get a discount of some sort. Plane tickets are generally more expensive when purchased at the last minute, but any discount is a good discount.
