The United States Department of Labor is a government office that is responsible for regulating hourly wages, occupational safety standards, and unemployment benefits. Although the Department of Labor is a federal office, many of the individual states also have their own similar office.

The DepartmentofLabor was established in 1884 under then heading "Bureau of Labor" in order to promote the welfare of the working individual, and to improve his working condition as well as give him the opportunity for profitable employment.
